Optical Filters (Dichroic, Colored Glass, Bandpass)

04 Nov 2024

Optical filters are used to selectively transmit specific wavelengths of light. Shanghai Optics manufactures a variety of filters for various applications, including:

Dichroic Filters:

  • Single substrate with a hard, dense coating.
  • Expensive but highly precise and durable.
  • Manufactured using cutting-edge IBS technology.
  • Thinner and offer higher transmission than traditional coated filters.

Colored Glass Filters:

  • Simple glass substrate with injected dye.
  • Less expensive and highly stable.
  • More limited optical properties compared to dichroic filters.

Shortpass, Longpass, and Bandpass Filters:

  • Shortpass filters: Block longer wavelengths, allowing shorter wavelengths to pass.
  • Longpass filters: Block shorter wavelengths, allowing longer wavelengths to pass.
  • Bandpass filters: Transmit a specific range of wavelengths (passband) and block others.
  • Both shortpass and longpass filters are sometimes called edge filters.
