Ultra-Low Noise Electronics for Quantum Applications

15 Aug 2024

One of the major challenges in developing useful quantum systems is the reliable measurement of signals and outputs from the system itself.  Introducing noise to already small measurements can make extracting useful information impossible, so it's crucial to carefully consider the design of any measurement electronics.

In photonic systems, signals are often detected through photodiodes.  The fundamental noise of photodiodes themselves ultimately limits measurement resolution, making the selection of an appropriate photodiode critical.  However, with suitably designed avalanche photodiodes, even single-photon resolution is possible.

Another vital component is the transimpedance amplifier, which amplifies the tiny photocurrent from the photodetector to easily measurable and recordable voltages.  The noise and bandwidth of transimpedance amplifiers need to be matched to the expected application, though versatile, high-bandwidth, adjustable gain amplifiers can also be an option in R&D projects, when the exact requirements are not yet known.

LASER COMPONENTS offers a wide selection of both photodetectors, including single photon counters, and transimpedance amplifiers that feature noise levels down to 0.2 fA/√Hz and gain reaching up to 1013 V/A.  These components are suitable whenever you need to ensure that acquisition electronics are not the limiting factor in measurements, including novel sensor characterisation, and the lowest noise photodiode applications!
