Customised Fibre Assemblies for Spectroscopy

30 Jul 2024

Optical fibres are fundamental components enabling a wide variety of modern technologies. Their applications span multiple industries and scientific fields.  In the realm of telecommunications, optical fibres form the backbone of modern communication networks, transmitting data globally at high speeds.  The oil and gas industry relies heavily on optical fibres for essential downhole sensing. In scientific research, optical fibres play a critical role in various applications, including interferometry and spectroscopy.

Choosing the appropriate optical fibre for a specific application, particularly in spectroscopy, requires careful consideration of several factors.

Optical constraints are a primary concern, the specifications of both the light source and the spectrometer dictate the required fibre diameter and numerical aperture.  In the case of fibre bundles, they also can limit the number of fibres within the bundle itself.  In certain applications, optical coating also need to be customised for specific wavelengths.  These parameters are crucial for ensuring optimal light transmission and signal quality.

Mechanical factors also play a significant role in fibre selection.  The bending radius and physical size of the fibre (or fibre bundle) can limit options in certain applications, especially in confined spaces or when routing through complex systems.

Environmental considerations are equally important in the selection process.  The fibre must be able to withstand the temperature and pressure ranges of its intended environment.  Chemical compatibility is another critical factor, as the fibre may be exposed to various substances depending on its application.  In vacuum applications, the outgassing properties of the fibre become a crucial consideration to prevent contamination.

Regardless of your requirements, LASER COMPONENTS can manufacture a suitable fibre assembly and bundle for your specific application, from early-stage prototyping to high volume industrial scales.
