Incident light is dispersed on the rear side of the grating at a fixed angle.
Transmission gratings can be very forgiving for certain types of grating alignment errors, and their dispersion characteristics can lend themselves to compact systems utilizing small detector arrays. The gratings are also fairly polarisation insensitive compared with their reflective counterparts.
