Germanium

18 Jun 2021

Germanium (Ge) is in the range of 2-12 μm. Germanium is the most commonly used for making optical lenses and optical windows in high-efficiency infrared imaging systems. Due to the wide transmission range and opacity of visible light, Germanium is very suitable for infrared lasers and optical systems for the manufacture of optical components. Germanium's high refractive index and minimal surface curvature make it an ideal material for making low-power imaging systems. The small color difference often eliminates the need for correction.

Germanium Transmission Chart:

The absorption of Germanium increases with temperature. The obvious transmission degradation of Germanium material starts at about 100 ℃, and accelerates the degradation between 200 ℃ and 300 ℃, which may lead to catastrophic failure of the optical fiber. Due to the high reflectivity of the substrate surface, AR coated or DLC coated are widely used on Germanium's surfaces.

Yutai Optics can provide Ge blanks with diameters ranged from 7 mm to 300 mm and thicknesses from 0.8 mm to 40 mm. The rectangular blank has a size of 200 mm x 200 mm and a thickness of up to 100 mm. The resistivity is 5-40 Ω/m2. We can produce curved blanks with diameters from 15 mm to 200 mm. The diameter tolerance can be accurate to 0.03 mm (0.1 mm is the standard diameter tolerance). Prism, lens, window and other optical components can be customized according to customers’ specifications and drawings.

Highly recommended Germanium Optics from Yutai Optics:
D3-10mm mirco Ge lens,
Big(Dia>100mm) Ge windows.
