Knight Optical Knows its ABCs of Optical Components for UVC Sterilisation and Disinfection

UVC light is considered to be between 100 and 280nm. Yet, the waveband from 200 to 280nm is the most effective against bacteria and viruses. Therefore, this is the target waveband for optical components used in UVC germicidal irradiation.

Here at Knight Optical, we supply a wide-ranging portfolio of protective optical components – such as Domes and Windows manufactured from UV Fused Silica or Fused Quartz – for UVC sterilisation and disinfection. UV Fused Silica transmits down to 185nm, with a high transmission throughout the effective UVC waveband. What’s more, it is also an extremely durable and pure material, making it ideal as a front optic.

For more complex and unique designs, we provide moulded optical components manufactured from specialist UV glass. The two main glass types we supply are clear UV, which transmits UV and visible wavelengths, and UV filter glass, which transmits UV whilst absorbing visible light.

UV Filters are also commonly used in UVC sterilisation systems. Here, they ensure only desired wavelengths are transmitted whilst blocking the remainder. We stock UV Bandpass Filters with centre wavelengths (CWLs) focused on different UV light sources – such as mercury lamps (254nm) and the increasingly popular 222nm wavelength (due to its germicidal properties, whilst also being less harmful to humans). As well as stock products, Knight Optical can also offer custom-made Bandpass and UV Colour Glass Filters manufactured to your bespoke specifications.

All our optical components are checked for quality in our state-of-the-art Metrology Laboratory using equipment from ZYGO, Agilent Technologies and Starrett, allowing us to work to the highest QA standards and meet the tolerance specifications on these precision components.
