Award-Winning 43-Megapixel Imaging System Measures MicroLED Subpixels for Luminance and Color Correction

29 Oct 2020

Engineered to replicate the human eye’s sensitivity to light, imaging photometers are specialty visual inspection systems. For display measurement, imaging photometers provide image resolution and signal-to-noise benefits that enable precise detection of defects on a screen and, most importantly, measurement of exact luminance levels of each and every pixel in a display.

MicroLED and other emissive display technologies rely on increasingly small light-emitting elements for visual detail. As today’s emerging display devices increase dramatically in resolution and pixel density, measurement systems designed to provide display qualification and correction must offer more sensor pixels to measure these displays accurately. Traditional systems for subpixel display measurement and correction have offered limited resolution and image quality, reducing the accuracy and usefulness of their results for display analysis and correction.

The award-winning ProMetric® Y series of imaging photometers is designed for high-volume production testing of displays, smartphones, tablets, notebooks, keyboards, and lighting products. With resolutions options up to 43 megapixels, the ProMetric Y is ideal for capturing measurements at the pixel and subpixel for light output characterization. In emissive displays like microLED, miniLED, and OLED, independently emitting pixels can vary from one to the next, causing non-uniformity in brightness or color that can worsen at different display bright states. Within a single measurement, the ProMetric Y measures an entire display in exact detail across thousands of emissive pixels, acquiring values for each pixel in the display in less than 1.5 seconds for a single measurement.

Key features of the ProMetric Y Imaging Photometer:

  • High Speed: Minimum measurement time (photopic) to 0.3 seconds
  • Multiple resolution options: 2, 16, 29, and 43 megapixels
  • Photometric (visible spectrum) and radiometric (IR) options available
  • Electronically controlled lens to adjust focus and aperture from software
  • Multiple lens options: 20 mm, 35 mm, 50 mm, 100 mm macro, and 200 mm
  • Optional lens additions: AR/VR Lens, Conoscope Lens, Microscope Lens
  • Used with ProMetric® Software or TrueTest™ Automated Visual Inspection Software for fully automated test sequencing
