IR Detectors in Flame Detection

10 Jan 2018

Infrared IR, detectors are widely used to monitor industrial facilities for the presence of

fl ames ensuring that the risk of an outbreak of fi re is minimised. A fl ame will fl icker randomly

at a rate between 1 and 20Hz when it is burned naturally, modulating any IR signal

generated. Pyroelectric and lead sulphide detectors sense this modulated IR light and so

can provide a warning of the presence of a fl ame. The signal to noise characteristic of the IR

sensor determines the range and sensitivity of the fl ame detection instrument.

Since its founding in 1982, LASER COMPONENTS has specialised in IR sensors for use in fl ame

detection devices We manufacture lead sulphide detectors at our assembly plant in Arizona

and pyroelectric detectors in Florida. Our PB25 PbS detector is a cost eff ective sensor

for this application and generates a response to the presence of a fl ame in 30mS at ranges

out to 65 metres. The recent addition of a diff erential pyroelectric detector to our portfolio

of sensors provides fl ame detection appliance manufacturers with an innovative sensor

with even higher levels of signal to noise and immunity to electromagnetic interference.
