Sub millimetre measurements over a large area? What is a PSD?

09 Apr 2014

A PSD (Position Sensing Detector) is capable of large area readings up to 45x45mm with position errors as low as 2.5µm and rise-times as short as 30ns! PSDs are becoming increasingly popular due to their simplistic design compared to quadrant photodiodes. With their single large area detector PSDs detect the photometric centroid of an incident laser beam to deliver accurate position information regardless of the beam shape from 400-1100nm.

PSDs are analogue devices and therefore display excellent resolution, which is determined by the signal-to-noise ratio. To complement the standard range of one- and two-dimensional PSDs users have the option to enhance the sensitivity for UV, YAG, or nuclear applications.

LASER COMPONENTS specialises in the specification and design of customised SiTek PSDs to fit bespoke applications. Some customisable features include rise-time, active area size, packaging, windows and filters, and electronic properties.
