Bristol Instruments Adds Optical Thickness Gauge For Thicker Materials

Precise non-contact thickness measurement is now available for materials up to 16 mm.

VICTOR, NEW YORK January 22, 2014 – Bristol Instruments, Inc., a leader in optical interferometer-based instrumentation, has expanded its family of optical thickness gauge products. The 157 Series Optical Thickness Gauge uses Bristol’s proven interferometer-based technology to measure the absolute thickness of a variety of materials. The new product has a larger measurement limit of 16 mm in order to accommodate thicker samples such as protective security glass, architectural glass, and semiconductor materials.

The new 157-1-16 Optical Thickness Gauge measures the absolute optical thickness of materials that are 14 μm to 16 mm thick. The thickness of a single layer or multiple layers is measured to an accuracy of ± 0.1 μm. This performance is guaranteed over long periods of time by continuously referencing the measurements to a built-in standard of length. What’s more, the interferometer design provides unmatched stability virtually eliminating thermal drift so that the system’s accuracy and repeatability are maintained over the specified operational environmental conditions.

“Several of our customers were excited about the capabilities of our Optical Thickness Gauge,” said Todd Blalock, Director of Optical Metrology Products. “But their materials were a bit too thick for us to measure. So, we modified the design of our product to extend its measurement limit to 16 mm, thereby satisfying our customers’ requirements.”
