Thermal sensor for fast and precise laser power measurements

29 Aug 2013

Description
The gSKIN® sensors are thermal detectors. By absorbing the laser power, one side of the sensor is heated. The induced heat flow is measured through 29 ultra-sensitive thermocouples which are placed in a 72 mm2 surface area with a thickness of 0.4 mm. The sensor comes with a 0-level package of optimized polymer, a 1st-level package of aluminum and a black absorber coating.

Calibration
The sensor is thermally calibrated under steady state conditions with a method cohering to the ISO8301 standard. The sensor is calibrated at a mean temperature of 22.5 °C. Each gSKIN® sensor is shipped with a calibration certificate containing the sensor sensitivity.

Laser Power Measurement
The sensor generates an analog voltage output Vout. The incoming laser power PL is calculated with
PL = Vout / SL
where SL is the sensitivity of the sensor in V/W.

Example:
- Sensor signal: Vout = 50 mV
- Sensitivity: SL = 30 mV/W
- Laser power: PL = 50/30 = 1.667 W
