21 Jun 2013 Laser Quantum has manufactured continuous wave and ultrafast femtosecond lasers for over 19 years. The gecco is a new 84MHz laser offering over 600mW of output with a TEM00 beam M2<1.2. It contains an integrated pump laser sealed in the cavity reducing the need for alignment with the Ti:Sapphire crystal. This together with the unique self-starting mechanism that involves no moving cavity components, results in long periods between maintenance and mirror alignment. In a recent test, the gecco was installed in an independent laboratory, powered up each morning and its performance matched that of the pre-existing laser. However, much to the satisfaction of the test customer, the gecco maintained its mode locking for over 3 months before any maintenance was required and reliably delivered the same output every day. When needed, re-optimisation took less than ten minutes and involved a straightforward process only making use of the 2 adjustable cavity end mirror mounts.
This long working period between required interventions meant the researchers were able to focus more on the meaningful work the photons were doing rather than creating them.
