VPIphotonics – Professional Simulation Support for Cutting-Edge Research and Development |
13 Sep 2012 VPIphotonics is pleased to announce with Version 9.0 a major upgrade of its market-leading photonic components and systems design suite VPItransmissionMaker & VPIcomponentMaker. Version 9.0 comes with a new Photonic Design Environment (PDE) – a greatly improved user interface strongly enhancing usability, offering personalization of layout and display, and many other advances simplifying the design process. VPItransmissionMaker Optical Systems provides the brand new Constellation Analysis Tool (CAT), which helps simplifying the design and optimization of adaptive modulation formats utilizing arbitrary IQ constellations for transmission systems with data rates beyond 100Gb/s. While optimizing symbol positions and decision thresholds, the user can investigate the performance of each symbol individually and compare to the performance of the overall data stream. Further on enhanced OFDM modeling accounts for arbitrary power loading, different encoding and performance estimation of individual subcarriers, and inclusion of customizable DSP functions. Multiple GPUs can be utilized simultaneously to further reduce simulation time of transmission fiber in long-haul and high-capacity systems. Additionally, the speed of Monte-Carlo based BER calculations for mQAM/mPSK-type modulated signals has been greatly increased, and the modeling support for applications such as parametric amplification, optical interconnects, and optical access technologies improved. VPIcomponentMaker Photonic Circuits users benefit from many new bidirectional models representing various passive and polarization-sensitive functions in Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs). Additionally, they can build their own PIC sub-elements with customizable number of ports and transfer characteristics using the new PIC-cosimulation environment. The drastically reduced demand on memory and simulation time of the SMATRX domain allows large-scale PICs with several hundreds of sub-elements to be easily designed, geometrical tolerances analyzed and the performance optimized. Furthermore, the modeling of gain gratings and interface reflections in multisection active devices has been enhanced. Nonlinearities due to Kerr and two-photon absorption can be taken into account now. Higher order voltage-dependent characteristics of EAM sections are also considered. The modeling scope of VPIcomponentMaker Optical Amplifiers has been significantly enhanced by supporting the analysis of dynamic EDFA characteristics and design of corresponding optical or electronic control circuits. VPIcomponentMaker & VPItransmissionMaker have proven to be beneficial in winning andsuccessfully performing many research and design projects – for commercial companies as well as for educational institutions. With the improved capabilities provided in Version 9.0, the VPIphotonics modeling suite is set to deliver the same outstanding results in the future. Version 9.0 will be available for public release in October 2012.
