Newport Oriel's Sol-UV™ Series - UV Solar Simulators for Sun Protection Factor (SPF) Testing

03 Feb 2012

Oriel®, a Newport Corporation Brand, now offers the Sol-UV™ Solar Simulator, an advanced solar simulator for demanding photobiological applications such as testing over-the-counter sunscreen products’ sun protection factor (SPF). The new unit simulates solar ultraviolet radiation (UV) required to induce a minimum erythemal response for in-vivo SPF testing and can be used for in-vitro methods as well. Oriel’s Sol-UV Series solar simulator’s spectral output is designed to comply with the governing standards to meet FDA Sunscreen Drug Products for Over-the-Counter Human Use, June, 2011, the International Sun Protection Factor (SPF) Test Method, May 2006 (CTFASA, COLIPA, CTFA, JCIA), and ISO Cosmetics – sun protection test methods: in vivo determination of the sun protection factor, ISO 24444:2010.

The Oriel Sol-UV simulators feature a patent-pending optical design to achieve spectral compliance, using a proprietary filter and unique geometry to meet all applicable standards for a light source for SPF testing. The output beam sizes include 2 x 2, 4 x 4, or 6 x 6 inches. Calibration-certified by Rapid Precision Testing Laboratories (RPTL), the Sol-UV Solar Simulators are a cost-effective solution for SPF testing in laboratories or clinics.

Optional filters that provide UVA, UVA-I, UVA-II, and UVB tailored output are available, making Sol-UV a versatile tool for applications such as phototoxicology, photostability/sensitivity, and photocarcinogenesis studies.

Sol-UV features include: non-uniformity of irradiance of less than 5 percent over the entire sampling area; variable output attenuation from 10% to 100% of available solar constants (without affecting spectral compliance) using an integrated attenuating aperture; temperature sensors and safety interlocks to prevent inadvertent exposure to UV radiation; a black, non-reflective surface to minimize stray light; and easy lamp replacement.
