Lead Salt Sensors and Drive Electronics

28 Apr 2011

LASER COMPONENTS is pleased to announce two new families of lead salt infrared detectors manufactured by Cal Sensors Inc (CSI) as well as a new digital drive board. The new single channel detectors (SCD) and multichannel detector (NCD) families provide industry-leading sensitivity and quality for a variety of infrared sensing applications, while the new digital drive board optimises detector performance.

The SCD-13HV (single channel detector-high-value) PbS detectors are designed to meet today’s demanding requirements for high volume, cost-sensitive applications. Thanks to best-in-class process controls and automated production equipment, the SCD-13HV line combines competitive price/performance with exceptional repeatability and product consistency. Applications for these sensors include fire safety and flame detection, as well as process and quality control. All SCD-13HV products support a glass window or lens configuration, available as 1x1mm detectors in a TO-46 can, or as 2x2mm or 3x3mm detectors in TO-5 packages.

The company’s new PbS and PbSe multi-channel detectors (MCDs) provide high sensitivity for detection of up to four distinct materials/gases across the 1-5µm wavelength range. The MCD product family provides exceptional channel isolation (>99.5 per cent) in a compact TO-5 footprint. An optional integrated thermistor within the MCD package optimises temperature compensation, maximising measurement precision. Co-locating the temperature sensor and detector material in a hermetically-sealed TO-5 package ensures they both feel the same temperature variations, reducing environmental effects. The four-channel configuration offers significant opportunities for cost reduction and design simplification minimising the need for multiple individual detectors and complex optics. The technology is well-suited to a variety of applications including industrial and medical gas analysis and emissions testing of vehicles or aircraft. The technique is ideal for environmental applications such as stack monitoring, greenhouse gas analysis and overseeing air quality in confined spaces, including tunnels and underground structures.

Finally, the company’s digital drive board optimises signal levels for CSI’s one to four channel detectors, providing all the electronics necessary to drive the sensors, digitise the output and connect via USB to a computer or microprocessor. Engineers can focus on the challenges of the system’s design by quickly validating detector viability. The boards support PbS and PbSe detector technologies.
