10 Mar 2009 EKSMA OPTICS offers an attractive lasing materials ytterbium doped potassium tungstates, namely Yb:KYW and Yb:KGW. Yb:KGW crystal as a gain medium exhibits high slope efficiency with CW laser and diode pumping at around 980 nm, owing to the small quantum defect level (~5%), high stimulated-emission cross-section (up to 2.8 x 10 -20 cm 2) and suitable Stark-level structure. Large emission and absorption cross-sections associated with Yb:KGW and Yb:KYW materials has resulted in efficient operation of lasers both in continuous–wave and pulsed mode. Compared with Nd-doped media, broader emission bandwidths of Yb:KGW and Yb:KYW make them ideal candidates for the generation of ultrashort pulses by compact diode-pumped laser systems and directly diode pumped regenerative amplifiers.
