Third-Generation 1550 nm Pulsed Laser Diodes (PLDs)

14 Jan 2009

LASER COMPONENTS Canada presents the third generation of 1550 nm series PLDs. The coatings for these lasers, which operate at a standard efficiency of 0.35 A/W, were significantly improved.

When using shorter pulses, the user can overdrive the peak power level stated in the datasheet (50 W @ 150 ns) manyfold. The divergence angle was also reduced to 10° x 30°. This reduction leads to better collimation of the laser beam and greater power intensity. The excellent temperature stability is also quite convincing: At a temperature of +85°C approximately 70% of the peak power can be achieved. The options available for fiber coupling or the mounting of microlenses in front of the PLDs are quite interesting. These lasers are used in “eye-safe” rangefinders, laser radars, and in “friend or foe” recognition. Our InGaAs APDs are perfectly suited for use with these lasers. In fact, this combination makes rangefinding possible across several kilometers.
