The new system is a compact, longlife replacement for Argon Ion gas lasers
The Omicron BluePhoton 488 is a 20mW compact diode laser system with far lower power consumption and far longer lifetimes than the 488nm gas lasers it has been designed to replace. This is expected not only to satisfy a huge demand for existing systems already in the field, but also to open up applications which have proved unsuitable for the use of bulky gas and DPSS laser systems. The Omicron BluePhoton 488 has extremely low noise, and its astigmatism compensation provides a perfectly round focused beam with an m-squared value of around 1.1. The system is ideally suited for biotechnology applications like confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, fluorescence imaging and Raman spectroscopy.
