Fiber Optical Probes for Optical Spectroscopy

19 Jul 2007

The application fields for spectroscopy are growing rapidly. Fiber optical probes allow for a flexible interface between the spectrometer and the sample to be examined.

They even reach small spaces or tube-like structures and allow remote sensing over long distances. Different kinds of probes exist: reflection probes, transmission probes, transmission dip probes, Raman probes, etc. Due to the large number of possible parameter configurations, the majority of probes are custom made. The manufacturer, therefore, requires special technical knowledge to ensure safety and the best results. The company SEDI Fibres Optiques has substantial experience with these types of applications and is therefore in a position to offer the best solution in each case and simultaneously optimize the following parameters: Transmission of the required wavelength: the choice of fiber depends on the wavelength range (UV, Vis, and IR.) Interface between the spectrometer and the sample to be examined: the size of the fiber and the precision of the array are important to obtain the best alignment possible with the optical detector. High resolution systems require very thin line arrays without any gaps between the adjacent fibers. Probe ends: The mechanical interface must allow the optimum positioning of the probe and simultaneously collect the maximum amount of light possible. Special optics, deflectors, or filters may be necessary for this purpose. Possible fiber configurations include round bundles and line-like or hexagon-shaped configurations. Buffer: Depending on the environment, a number of different materials and solutions are available. The biocompatibility of the materials can also be a deciding factor. Thanks to their high precision assembly technology, SEDI’s probes are used in several applications. They increase the possibilities of conducting spectroscopic measurements, especially under harsh environmental conditions.
