04 Dec 2008 The ZEMAX optical system design program now has a photo-realistic image simulation feature, allowing the designer to select an object scene or test pattern and ray trace this through the system. This gives a fast and accurate representation of the quality of the formed image. This new analysis feature is perfect for communicating performance to non-optics specialists.
The graphic shows a scene as imaged though a simple singlet lens, and clearly shows pin-cushion distortion and field curvature. This analysis can be applied to any imaging system.
Dr Mark Nicholson, Vice President Operations of ZEMAX Development Corporation, says “We've put a lot of effort into making this feature ray-trace extremely quickly. On single-CPU machines you can get useful results in less than a minute, and photo-realistic quality is about 20 minutes. But, ZEMAX can work with up to 16 CPUs. Whilst such big machines are still fairly uncommon, four-core machines are becoming standard in engineering workstations. ZEMAX is designed from the ground up to split calculations over multiple CPUs and recombine the results seamlessly”
This feature is just one of over 30 additions to the latest version of the highly successful ZEMAX optical design package. Ask us for more information on how ZEMAX can help you, today.
