MIGHTION® F14845-11: high-speed hybrid detection for ToF mass spectrometry

22 October 2026 Spectrometry

In time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ToF MS), detector performance directly affects how clearly ions can be resolved, identified, and measured. Conventional microchannel plate (MCP) assemblies often use two MCPs in a chevron configuration to achieve high gain, but this architecture can become more susceptible to saturation, increase capacitance, and accelerated wear under charge loading increase. Hamamatsu Photonics’ MIGHTION F14845-11 addresses these challenges with a hybrid architecture that combines one MCP with an avalanche diode (AD).

A hybrid architecture built for demanding measurements

The MCP converts incoming ions into electrons and provides initial multiplication. The AD then supplies second-stage gain and high-speed readout, replacing the second MCP and conventional metal anode. This configuration provides a minimum gain of 1 × 106 while reducing the charge burden on the MCP. An electron lens focuses the amplified electrons onto the compact AD, helping lower capacitance and support fast, stable signal capture.
