MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Optical Systems Inc. (NEOS) today announced that they have been awarded the status of “Architect” in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III), by the SDSS-III Management Committee. NEOS shall be listed alongside other Architects on the wiki-page of the SDSS-III Collaboration Council.
“It is an honor to be recognized for our contributions to the SDSS-III”, stated Greg Fitzgerald, Chief Technical Officer for New England Optical Systems. “It has been a privilege to collaborate with the SDSS-III team, and see the APOGEE optical assembly integrated into the final system.”
APOGEE is an acronym for Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment, and is one of four systems that make up the SDSS-III instrument. The APOGEE lens assembly was built and delivered by New England Optical Systems, which has an aperture of approximately 16 inches. The system was delivered to the University of Virginia, and will be ultimately installed at the Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico.
NEOS is an engineering and manufacturing company of high performance infrared optical systems. Additionally, they design and build custom infrared interferometers and automated MTF test stations. Prototype to production capable, they serve thermal imaging markets of surveillance, reconnaissance, tracking, navigation, LAV, UAV, aerospace, soldier systems, astronomical, and commercial.
