Alfa Chemistry: Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) Materials for Use in Lighting and Display Applications

Date Announced: 08 May 2024

Organic light emitting diode(OLED) is a thin film multilayer device composed of carbon molecules or polymers including metal foil, film or plate (rigid or elastic) platform, electrode layer, active material layer, reverse electrode layer and protective layer. OLED has semiconductor properties and its structural layers include: Hole Transport Layer (HTL), Light-emitting Layer (EL) and Electronic Transport Layer (ETL). If the power supply provides appropriate voltage, the positive holes and negative charges in the OLED can be combined in the luminous layer to produce light. According to the different formulas, three kinds of primary colors including red, green and blue can be produced, which compose the basic colors. The OLED has the advantages of self-luminescence, wide angle of view, high contrast, low power consumption, high reaction rate, full color, simple process, lower cost, quick reaction, light weight, thin thickness, simple structure and so on, which has very broad development prospects.

Illumination: We should pay attention to the blue light content when we use the lighting. Blue light destroys biological cells, causing damage to people's eyes and skin. OLED is closest to natural light source and is suitable for the manufacture of large-area lighting panels. And due to the low Blu-ray content, OLED is suitable for lighting. For example, candlelight OLED can simulate the color temperature changes in the 30mins before sunset, and its light color is as warm as the sunset, almost without blue radiation, so it is very suitable for safe night lighting.

Displays: Organic light emitting diode display technology refers that organic semiconductor materials and light-emitting materials give out light and display under the driven of current. The main application areas include: commercial areas such as POS machines, ATM machines, copiers and game consoles; communication areas such as mobile phones and mobile network terminals; computer fields such as PDA, commercial and home computers; consumer electronics products such as audio equipment, digital cameras and portable DVDs; Industrial areas such as instrumentation; transportation areas such as GPS and aircraft instrumentation.
