SA Photonics Recognized for Exceptional Innovation

Date Announced: 16 Feb 2011

Tibbetts Awards honor companies that bring federal R&D from the lab to the market.

LOS GATOS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--SA Photonics today announced that it was selected for a prestigious Tibbetts Award for its contributions to the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. The Small Business Administration (SBA) presents the awards to companies and individuals that have advanced technological innovation while achieving broader social and economic benefit.

“This award is a significant milestone for SA Photonics,” said SA Photonics CEO, Jim Coward. “It is the culmination of eight years of hard work and an intense focus on commercializing our innovative technologies.”

SA Photonics’s Tibbetts Award recognizes its outstanding work for the Department of Defense (DOD). It has supplied DOD agencies with advanced technologies ranging from compact fiber optic gyros to wide field of view digital night vision head mounted displays, high power millimeter/microwave sensors, and pulsed fiber lasers.

“When we won our first SBIR award in 2002, we had 3 employees working around a kitchen table,” continued Coward. “Today, thanks to our SBIR success, we have expanded our staff to over 35 high technology jobs. We have also been able to increase our community impact by participating in the Bay Area Innovation Alliance and sponsoring students in the FIRST Robotics program.”

Coward and Mike Browne, SA Photonics’ VP of Product Development, accepted the award at a ceremony in Washington, DC. Afterward, they met with SBA Administrator, Karen Mills, and attended a reception at the White House.

“This is a proud day not only for SA Photonics but also for the city of Los Gatos,” said Sean Greene, SBA’s Associate Administrator for Investment and Senior Adviser for Innovation. “Companies like SA Photonics represent the best in American ingenuity.”

Founded in 2002, SA Photonics is a pioneer in the development and deployment of innovative photonics solutions for commercial and government applications. SA Photonics’ expertise includes optical communications, ruggedized photonics hardware, opto-mechanical design, and complex analog and digital engineering for space, marine, avionic and ground applications.
