Date Announced: 10 Nov 2020
Torbay, UK – Effect Photonics is set to open a New Product Development department within EPIC, a centre of excellence, supporting technological innovation and promoting collaborative activity between businesses and research institutions. EPIC focuses on supporting high potential companies and encourages investment into Torbay’s microelectronics and photonics sector, and in the south west of the UK.
The Netherlands-headquartered company, is expanding its facilities within Torbay, having already established its manufacturing operations in Brixham.
The move will see Effect, a developer of photonic integrated circuits, occupy two units including a modern lab and an office. It is expected that new jobs will be created within EPIC, this is in addition to the recruitment drive that is currently underway in Effect’s other sites, including Eindhoven and Taiwan.
Effect has grown significantly in the past two years creating new highly skilled jobs in Torbay. It is expected that this trend will continue over the coming months with the business developing new optical transceiver technologies that will be used in applications such as 5G mobile networks.
Andrew Stimson, Effect’s lead on the move, commented: “Effect has some exciting growth plans and we saw EPIC as the logical venue to support our development. EPIC presents the ideal environment to develop the manufacturing technology required to serve our next generation of products.”
EPIC tenants have access to over £1.5M worth of prototyping equipment in addition to a classified clean room.
Despite the uncertainty over recent months, EPIC has continued to welcome new businesses into the centre. In addition to Effect, this has seen companies such as Bay Photonics and Covert Antenna Systems relocating to the building.
Centre Director, Wayne Loschi, commented: “EPIC has invested heavily in prototyping equipment to support the needs of our local electronics cluster. Effect choosing EPIC as a venue to house its New Product Development activities demonstrates the progress the centre has made.”
Effect Photonics to exhibit at ECOC Virtual Exhibition 2020
From December 7-9, 2020, Effect Photonics will be exhibiting at the ECOC Virtual Exhibition. ECOC is the top networking destination for the optical communications industry.
Join us, along with your colleagues, peers and over 300 international exhibitors at ECOC Exhibition 2020, for three days of networking, business, sharing ideas, learning, and discussing new trends. The virtual exhibition hall will work in a similar way to the physical exhibition. You will be able to browse the hall and visit our virtual booth, view our videos and download content, as well as request a meeting with the EFFECT Photonics Team.
What EFFECT Photonics is currently working on:
Narrow Tunable SFP+ Transceivers for Next Generation Mobile Networks
In response to the exponentially growing demand for bandwidth at the edges of the network, EFFECT Photonics is now shipping its narrow tunable SFP+ transceiver targeted at next generation mobile networks. Designed to withstand the most demanding of circumstances, these modules can operate in the freezing temperatures of northern Canada, but also in the blistering heat of Vietnam. Our transceivers are equipped with our latest System-on-Chip (SoC) technology, which is best-in-class.
NarroWave enabled SFP+ modules
At ECOC 2020, EFFECT Photonics is demonstrating its NarroWave enabled SFP+ modules. By using NarroWave enabled modules network operators can drive down cost and speed up service delivery. This is achieved by maximizing fibre capacity without the need to replace telecom equipment in the field. NarroWave enabled modules are completely agnostic and work with any network element that supports third-party optics
