SPIE welcomes 136 new Senior Members

Date Announced: 13 Sep 2018

The 2018 cohort includes the first SPIE Senior Members from Macau, Pakistan, and Croatia.

BELLINGHAM, Washington, USA and CARDIFF, UK - Dr. Nazif Demoli, of the Institute of Physics in Croatia; Dr. Yicong Zhou of the University of Macau; and Dr. Muhammad Faryad of Lahore University of Management Sciences are among the 136 SPIE members elevated to the rank of SPIE Senior Member this year. The academics, researchers and industry pioneers are being recognized for their professional experience, technical leadership, and active involvement with SPIE and the optics community.

Additional new Senior Members include Katie Schwartz, an SPIE Gender Equity Trask Force Member, currently contributing to SPIE's proactive work around diversity and inclusion; Brian Pogue, the editor of SPIE's Journal of Biomedical Optics; and Yanne Chembo, who was an instrumental advocate for UNESCO's Year of Light, an initiative of which SPIE was an official sponsor.

"Approval of the new SPIE Senior Members has been an exhilarating process," said SPIE Fellow Anita Mahadevan-Jansen, Vanderbilt University professor and chair of the SPIE Membership and Communities Committee. "It is always refreshing to welcome appointees from across the globe, and so wonderful to include our first Senior Members from Macau, Pakistan and Croatia. SPIE seeks to recognize their high-achieving members from diverse backgrounds and we work diligently and inclusively to nominate broadly from our international community. It's truly an honor to recognize and celebrate each one of our new Senior Members, who have rightfully earned their place in this program through the work that they do and through their ongoing contributions - personal as well as professional - to the optics community."

The SPIE Senior Member recognition program began in 2008 as a way to recognize active members earlier in their careers and from a broader constituency. Nominations for the 2019 cohort of SPIE Senior Members will be accepted through 15 March 2019; nomination support materials will be accepted until 1 April 2019.
