Global laser industry to discuss future of precision engineering at UK symposium

Date Announced: 21 Jun 2018

Right, Dave MacLellan (AILU) and Duncan Hand (Heriot-Watt) invite delegates to Edinburgh at the 2017 Symposium held in Japan.

Abingdon, Oxfordshire, UK -- The UK will play host to the global laser industry from 25 to 28 June this year, as industry and academia gather for the 19th Laser Precision Microfabrication Symposium (LPM) in Edinburgh, where the most advanced developments and recent trends in laser application for fine and precise fabrication of diverse materials will be presented and exhibited.

LPM 2018 will provide a platform for delegates to hear and participate in the discussion of the fundamental aspects of laser-matter interaction, the state-of-the-art of laser material processing, and topics for the next generation of fundamental scientists, end users and laser manufacturers.

Speaking ahead of the Symposium, the Co-Chair Professor Duncan Hand from Heriot Watt University said: “It is a fantastic opportunity to finally host LPM in the UK – the home of the industrial revolution. 250 years later and the capabilities of laser technology is delving deeper into precision and microfabrication.

“The strong relationships between industry and academic research play a major role in the development of new technologies fuelling innovation, precision and efficiency. LPM 2018 looks set to be the biggest yet outside Japan; this is a testament to the value of the industry within the United Kingdom.

“I’m looking forward to welcoming the global industry to the Scottish capital for a week which will be thought-provoking, insightful and undoubtedly challenge current thinking and technology.”

In addition to hearing from guest speakers speaking on a range of subjects, delegates will also be treated to the annual LPM Banquet, this year held at the National Museum of Scotland.

LPM 2018 is hosted by the UK-based Association of Industrial Laser Users (AILU) and Heriot-Watt University, a leading laser and photonics research institution and runs from the 25 – 28 June at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh.
