Zurich-produced devices estimated to enable as much as half of all optical internet traffic.
PITTSBURGH, March 12, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- II‐VI Incorporated (NASDAQ:IIVI), a leading provider of solutions for optical networks, today announced that its manufacturing operations reached two major shipment milestones: three million pump laser modules and a half a million erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs).
Significant advances in DWDM technology over the last two decades have enabled the rapid scaling of the optical communications infrastructure by several orders of magnitude. II-VI's pump lasers and EDFAs boost the power of optical signals at regular intervals along fiber-optic transmission lines.
"We estimate that II-VI's high performance gallium arsenide semiconductor lasers and differentiated EDFA design and manufacturing capabilities enable as much as 50% of all global internet traffic running through the optical transport network," said Sunny Sun, President, Photonics Segment, II-VI Incorporated. "Our pump lasers have stood the test of time and demonstrated decades of reliable operation, even on the ocean floor. By leveraging our own pump lasers, thermoelectric coolers, micro-optics and leading edge amplifier control electronics, our EDFAs reflect our expertise in vertical integration."
II-VI's gallium arsenide lasers and EDFAs trace their intellectual property, technology and reliability heritage to key industry pioneers, and are today produced on II-VI's world class manufacturing lines. The semiconductor lasers are designed and manufactured in Zurich, Switzerland, leveraging a legacy that spans more than 20 years. The laser chips are assembled on ceramic sub-mounts in Calamba, Philippines, and packaged in Shenzhen, China, on state-of-the-art automated assembly lines.
II-VI at OFC, Mar. 13-15, 2018, Booth #2313
II-VI will showcase new products at OFC 2018 that are driven by advances in our materials and technology platforms to enable next generation optical networks. The product showcase will include a broad portfolio of products for ROADM line cards, highly compact optical amplifier solutions tailored to enable high bit rate DWDM transceivers, micro-optics assemblies for CATV networks, micro-optics and optoelectronics for datacenter transceivers, InP-based epiwafers and thermo-electric solutions.
