The Optical Society of Japan (OSJ) and SPIE strengthened their collaborative relationship during a visit to Tokyo earlier this month by SPIE President Ralph James (Brookhaven National Lab) and other SPIE leadership.
At the invitation of OSJ President and retiring SPIE Board of Directors Member Mitsuo Takeda (University of Electro-Communications), James gave an invited plenary talk at Optics and Photonics Japan 2010, the OSJ annual meeting. Nearly 700 people attended the technical conference and exhibition held at Chuo University 7-9 November.
In addition to a technical talk on x- and gamma-ray detection, James provided an overview of SPIE activities, and congratulated SPIE Fellows from Japan named in 2010, Yukitoshi Otani (Utsunomiya University) and Soichi Owa (Nikon Corp.).
James Wyant (College of Optical Sciences, University of Arizona), Optical Society of America President and SPIE Past President, also spoke during the plenary session.
At the conference reception, James fielded questions from attendees on SPIE’s international outreach activities, conferences and trade shows with particular interest in Photonics West, the Fellows program, student chapters, and other activities of the Society.
"This meeting was an ideal opportunity to learn the latest news on optics and photonics in Japan and hear ideas from the region's leaders about ways SPIE can enhance its cooperation with OSJ and better serve the community," James noted.” We were able to continue our ongoing dialogue with the OSJ about how SPIE can better serve our Members and the photonics community in Japan.”
A special session celebrating the 50th anniversary of the invention of the laser featured luminaries from the laser community in Japan. Featured speakers K. Shimoda, H. Takuma, R. Itoh, K. Iga and T. Sasaki covered topics from the early research leading to the development of the laser through present-day innovations and applications.
SPIE hosted a dinner in honor of OSJ leadership and SPIE Fellows during the visit, including OSJ Past President and incoming SPIE Board of Directors Member Toyohiko Yatagai (Utsunomiya University), a Fellow of SPIE.
In 2009 SPIE signed an agreement with the Japan Society of Applied Physics emphasizing fostering the relationship between the OSJ and SPIE, and exploring mutually beneficial activities in support of Members and the photonics industry.
