The Optics Institute of Southern California Announces New On-Line Distance Education Optics & Laser Courses

Date Announced: 22 Nov 2010

On-line courses being held for first time early next year.

On November 10, 2010 the Optics Institute of Southern California (OISC) announced at the Optical Society of Southern California (OSSC) monthly meeting that enrollment is now open for its first on-line distance education courses beginning in January 2011.

Currently, the OISC is offering on-line distance education courses for optical, laser and fiber optic technicians and entry-level science and engineering students. In the future, classroom-based sessions, hands-on labs and seminars are planned.

“The OISC is a focal point for optics education and outreach in the arts and sciences“ says Founding Director, Donn Silberman. “We are dedicated to providing quality optics education & outreach to students and the general public. The OISC has always aimed at offering education that doesn’t just inform its students but rather provides a combination of theoretical and practical experience. By the time students leave their programs, they have usable knowledge that will serve them well.”

In 2003, the OISC became a project of Community Partners (their fiscal sponsor) and this has helped them focus on their core programs so they could grow and serve more people. The OISC has also been closely associated with the OSSC, as many of those participating in OISC courses, events and programs are members of the OSSC.

Some of the educational and outreach programs organized and promoted by the OSSC & the OISC include Family Day at the UC Irvine Beall Center for Art + Technology, Optricks & Lasers Extravaganza at the Discovery Science Center, and the new Optical Engineering & Instrument Design Certificate programs through UC Irvine Extension. Family attendance, individual participation, and volunteers are always welcome and encouraged.

About the OSSC: The Optical Society of Southern California (OSSC) is a local section of the Optical Society of America founded in 1951 to increase and disseminate the knowledge of optics, optical systems and science. More information about the OSSC can be found via their newsletters, regular monthly meetings, special events, educational programs, or at http://www.ossc.org.

About the OISC: The Optics Institute of Southern California is an Orange County-based nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of math, science, and engineering education through the use of optics and related technologies and phenomena. It seeks to foster the curious scientist, the artful mathematician, and the creative engineer in every student, regardless of age and technical background, with an educational approach that is hands-on, student-centered, and engaging.
