OmniVision's 13-Megapixel PureCel Image Sensor Brings Phase Detection Autofocus to Mainstream Smartphones

Date Announced: 31 Jul 2015

New OV13853 Utilizes Proven 1.12-Micron Pixel Technology to Deliver Best-In-Class Low-Light Performance and DSLR Quality Images and Features.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 31, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- OmniVision Technologies, Inc. (OVTI), a leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, today announced the OV13853, a high performance 13-megapixel PureCel™ image sensor that brings DSLR quality images and features to mainstream mobile devices. Leveraging OmniVision's proven 1.12-micron pixel technology, the OV13853 can achieve best-in-class high and low-light performance, while delivering support for advanced features such as phase detection autofocus (PDAF).

"The mobile device ecosystem has progressed vastly, and we believe that DSLR features such as PDAF can now potentially be in play even for the mainstream smartphone segment. In light of this, we are announcing today our first 13-megapixel sensor with special phase detection pixels to support PDAF for this segment," said Badri Padmanabhan, product marketing manager at OmniVision. "The OV13853 enables PDAF and is a pin-to-pin compatible upgrade from our previous 13-megapixel sensor. The OV13853 can thus be easily integrated into mainstream smartphone designs, which can dramatically shorten lead time to production."

The 1/3.06-inch OV13853 supports an active array of 4224 x 3136 pixels (13.2-megapixels) operating at 30 frames per second (FPS) with zero shutter lag, enabling seamless transition between recording video and still images. The sensor supports 4K2K ultra-high definition video at 30 FPS with full-horizontal field of view (FOV) and electronic image stabilization (EIS). The OV13853 can also record high frame rate 1080p HD video at 60 FPS with EIS to enable high quality video recording.

The OV13853 fits into a compact 8.5 mm x 8.5 mm module with a z-height of less than 5 mm. The sensor is currently in volume production.
