World leader in precision laser micro-optics introduces new diffusers for high power beam shaping applications
Dalgety Bay, UK, 29 July 2015 – PowerPhotonic today announces that it is has developed a new design technique for the creation of customized refractive diffusers for beamshaping of high-power lasers. The new diffusers use PowerPhotonic’s unique freeform direct-write process to fabricate these highly non-uniform surfaces in fused silica.
These optics are designed to impart a defined intensity pattern in the far-field, with a wide variety of distributions ranging from simple Gaussian diffusers to more complex beamshapers that create spots that are flat-top or annular; all with tightly controlled angles of divergence ranging from fractions of a degree up to 10 degrees and potential transmission efficiencies in excess of 99%.
Matt Currie, Product Manager at PowerPhotonic said, “designing diffusers for high power pulsed or CW lasers can be particularly challenging. Our design technique uses a new algorithm that allows for the design of surfaces that can precisely control the parameters of the laser source far-field by not only acting as a traditional diffuser but also shaping the intensity distribution of the beam at a system image plane. This gives us unprecedented flexibility to mitigate common problems such as hot spots and other non-uniformities while simultaneously maximising system performance.”
PowerPhotonic presented a paper at Laser Munich 2015 on this new class of diffuser.
