Prices frozen at 2010 levels.
BELLINGHAM, Washington, USA — 8 October 2010 — SPIE, among the first publishers last year to respond to economic challenges besetting the research library community by reducing subscription prices, is extending the reduction through 2011 by freezing prices at 2010 levels.
SPIE implemented a 10% rollback in pricing for institutional subscriptions to the SPIE Digital Library in 2010 in an effort to help librarians contain costs.
Through careful stewardship and with a stable subscription base, SPIE is able to maintain the price rollback program through 2011 while maintaining services, features, and content, noted SPIE CEO Eugene Arthurs.
Along with new functionality such as "more-like-this" recommendations, this year SPIE added eBooks to the SPIE Digital Library, and began publication of the new open-access journal SPIE Reviews.
SPIE will launch the Journal of Photonics for Energy in January 2011, and will make the new journal available at no charge throughout the year.
The SPIE Digital Library is the world's largest resource for optics and photonics research. The collection includes more than 300,000 journal and proceedings articles published from 1990 to the present, with approximately 18,000 new articles added annually. Topics span the broad interdisciplinary fields of optics, photonics, and imaging, with applications across biomedicine, communications, energy, aerospace, defense, manufacturing, computing, sensors, entertainment, and electronics.
More than 40,000 SPIE papers are cited in over 20,000 high-technology patents registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Thousands of other citations appear in the international patent literature.
The 2011 pricing freeze applies to current and new subscriptions to the full SPIE Digital Library as well as topical segment subscriptions. It does not apply to print editions of proceedings or journals, or to independent subscriptions to single SPIE journals.
