Rochester Optical Sets Its Sights on Asia

Date Announced: 19 Nov 2014

Company is planning to open a center to sell its frames and lenses for smart glasses in Hong Kong.

Rochester Optical, the US based frames and optics manufacturer, has its sights firmly set on the Asian Market.  While attending HKTDC Hong Kong Optical Fair, Rochester Optical Chief Executive, Patrick Ho confirmed that the company’s incredibly successful first showing at the Fair in November 2014 was the first step towards establishing an Asian branch of its global network.  He also revealed that the company is planning to open an optical centre to sell its frames and lenses in Hong Kong before the end of the year.

During the Hong Kong Optical Fair, Rochester’s solutions for smart glasses attracted an unprecedented amount of attention from all sectors of the industry. Promoted as a highlight of this iconic event by the organisers, demand for Rochester Optical’s patented range of prescription lenses and frames designed for use with smart glasses, ‘*Smart Frames and Smart GOLD lens design for Google Glass, Vuzix M100 and Epson Moverio BT-200’, was even higher than anticipated by the Rochester Team. As was Rochester’s exclusive range of frames, chimmm…..by Simon Chim for Google Glass, Vuzix and EPSON Moverio by the innovative Hong Kong eyewear designer.

This was the first time a dedicated exhibitor section for Smart Eyewear was created at the Hong Kong Optical Fair, heralding the fact that Smart Eyewear has arrived in the Asian marketplace.

Patrick Ho, says: “We have taken the globe by storm, and made our mark in the optical industry by creating an entirely new category in eyewear.  Smart Eyewear is here to stay! Obviously China is a big market, with more products like EPSON Moverio and Vuzix set to enter the Asian market, the need for our glasses will grow.”
Tim Moore, Director of Wearable Technology at Rochester Optical says: “The opportunities for eye care professionals to set themselves apart from ‘everyone else’ with Smart Glasses in now. Offering prescription lenses and fashionable and comfortable frames for Smart Glasses will obviously garner tremendous consumer interest and supercharge their profitable and successful practice on a scale that has not been seen this century, and position themselves firmly in the future.”

*Smart Frames are made for smart glasses exclusively. They are engineered to place the lenses in a position that is unique to smart glasses work. They allow for even the most near-sighted or far-sighted to wear and use smart glasses comfortably. Smart GOLD™ lenses are specifically designed with enhanced and digitally fabricated optics for smart glasses and only for use with smart glasses.  Smart Solutions™ are made for smart glasses like: Google Glass, Vuzix M100 and Epson Moverio BT-200. While a date for a widespread release of Google Glass has not been set, Epson is expected to launch its wearable glasses in Hong Kong next year, while Vuzix will launch on the mainland.
