Macular Society launches new PhD Studentship fund

Date Announced: 13 Aug 2014

UK charity supports research into macular disease.

The Macular Society has announced a new PhD Studentship fund, which will run alongside the already established Annual Research Grant round. The charity is offering two PhD Studentships of £100,000 for UK students starting in 2015, and applications are now open.

The Macular Society is also taking applications for their 2015 research grant round, with up to £170,000 available over three years.

Both the PhD Studentships and Annual Research Grants must be able to demonstrate potential benefit to people with macular disease, including age-related macular degeneration and macular dystrophies.

Age-related macular degeneration is estimated to affect more than half a million people in the UK alone, and is the biggest cause of sight loss in the developed world. At present, there is no treatment for the ‘dry’ form of the condition and the ‘wet’ form of the condition is only treated if caught early. However, treatments are not yet able to restore lost vision.

The Macular Society is the only UK charity dedicated to supporting research into macular disease and has committed more than £2.3 million of research funding since 1999.

Preliminary applications for the main research grants must be submitted by 5 September 2014. PhD Studentships should be submitted by the lead supervisor by 21 November 2014.

Applications will be considered for clinical or laboratory based research projects aimed at improving the treatment or quality of life of patients with macular disease.

In the sight loss sector, clinical and scientific research is only funded by the smaller charities. Research into all eye conditions accounts for less than five percent of all research in the UK.

Tony Rucinski, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “Every day, 200 more people are added to the number that live with macular sight loss in the UK. The Macular Society is unique in being determined to increase investment into pioneering medical research that will find a cure.

“Alongside funding the best quality research, I am delighted that we are now able to offer PhD Studentships. Building skills and capacity, and encouraging young researchers to stay in the sight loss sector is incredibly important to us achieving our aims.”
