Precession Elephant 2nd Generation

Date Announced: 26 Jun 2014

The Scanhead for high precision applications

At the LASYS 2014 in Stuttgart ARGES presents the next generation of the 3D Scanhead Precession Elephant, designed for high precision drilling applications.
The Scan head with up to 7 axes, which was aligned for the use with ultra-short pulse lasers, was extended by further details and functionalities in the latest generation in order to fulfil even more complex demands in micro processing.
Through the higher trepanning speed of up to 20,000 rpm and the alignment to an additional wavelength of 343-355 nm, the 2nd generation sets new standards for ultrahigh precision applications.

Further technical innovations are the increase of the aperture from 21 to 26 mm at the same speed and a better concentricity.
The bandwidth of options of the Precession Elephant 2nd generation was extended by an optical attenuator, a camera for beam alignment, a confocal detector and energy monitoring.

The term “precession” describes the course of movement of the laser beam. Via interpolation between different sets of parameters and adjustments, the Precession Elephant is able to create every elliptical, circular, spiral or helical course and even vary between different conicities and angles of taper during an ongoing drilling process. This offers an extensive freedom of design in terms of innovative drilling hole geometries and enables new potential savings, i.e. in fluid mechanics.

The operative range of the 7 axes scan head is the drilling of a variety of nozzles for applications in the automotive, textile or medicine field. Examples are amongst others the drilling of injection or spinning nozzles.
With the Precession Elephant micro drills with a diameter of 50 – 500 µm and a repeatability of <0,4% are feasible. For example - concerning the drilling of injection nozzles, the process time per hole is under 2 sec (diameter: 200 µm, material thickness: 200 µm, stainless steel).

The holes are burr-free at entry and exit and show a smooth and almost even wall, in addition there are caused no thermal effects on the material because of the use of ultra-short pulse technology.

The Precession Elephant 2nd Generation sets new standards in terms of quality, process time and repeatability and opens up new horizons for laser material processing even at demanding and complex applications.
