Optegra invests in Lensar femtosecond cataract laser across all its UK hospitals

Date Announced: 07 Apr 2014

Technology will be rolled out to the specialist ophthalmic services provider's six UK sites.

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Optegra, the specialist eye hospital group, announces today that it is further investing in the advanced LENSAR(TM) Femtosecond Cataract Laser distributed by Topcon.

Optegra will become the first national eye care provider to offer this state-of-the-art laser technology to patients across all of its UK hospitals, for either cataract surgery or Clarivu(TM) permanent lens replacement.

Consultant ophthalmic surgeon Sundeep Kheterpal, Director of Laser Cataract Surgery for Optegra, carried out the very first LENSAR(TM) procedure in the UK. He said: “The Optegra experience in evaluating this technology over the past year, at the Optegra Eye Hospital, London and the Optegra Solent Eye Hospital, has confirmed that we can make surgery as accurate and predictable as possible by using LENSAR’s 3D custom imaging. The procedure has been extremely well received by patients and uptake has been very strong.

“A further benefit is that the system makes removing the natural lens of the eye easier and more efficient. We firmly believe this is the future of cataract and refractive surgery.”

Due in all the hospitals during the first quarter of 2014, Optegra and Topcon are currently rolling out a comprehensive training programme for its staff and surgeons.

Gareth Steer, Managing Director of Optegra, says: “We have been so impressed with this technology that we are furthering our strategic partnership with Topcon GB and installing LENSAR(TM) across all six of our UK hospitals. We strongly believe that in the future this will be the standard way of carrying out lens replacement surgery and we are delighted to be at the forefront in offering this leading-edge technology.”

A key feature of The LENSAR™ Laser System is its imaging system which collects an unprecedented amount of biometric data. It then uses optical ray-tracing technology to reconstruct a precise 3-D model of the anterior segment of the eye using proprietary Augmented Reality™ technology. This model of each individual patient’s eye ensures the laser’s precision, accuracy and reproducibility.

Optegra is able to provide LENSAR through its investment and partnership with Topcon GB Ltd (“Topcon”) and LENSAR Inc (Orlando, Florida)(“LENSAR”).

Gloria McCall, Director of Surgical Sales for Topcon GB, comments: “Topcon is delighted to work with Optegra to deliver this innovative leading-edge Laser Surgery Technology, ‘LENSAR(TM)’, to enable the best possible outcomes for both cataract and Clarivu patients across all their hospitals.”

Patient Sue Dickinson, age 66, was one of the first patients to have experienced the LENSAR(TM) technology at Optegra. Her consultant, Mr. Kheterpal, explained that the new technology offered the highest level of precision and that Clarivu(TM) permanent lens replacement would remove the cataract and could free her from spectacles.

She said: “For me the decision was simple. Optegra offered me the latest technology for my procedure which gave me the highest level of safety and reassurance. I know that I would certainly need to have my cataracts operated on at some point, so why not do it now and enjoy the benefits of better vision for years to come? I did not realise anyone could see as well as this! I can now read the bottom line of the smallest eye chart.”
