Wakefield, MA - September 14th, 2012 - This year marks the 30th anniversary of Optikos Corporation, a worldwide supplier of optical metrology instruments and provider of optical engineering services. As they celebrate reaching this milestone the company extends their sincere appreciation to their loyal customers and employees. Founded by Dr. Stephen D. Fantone, Optikos has contributed instrumentation and product development to a broad range of markets ranging including optically based consumer products (e.g., cameras, projectors, toys), medical devices, laboratory instrumentation such as gene sequencers, and proprietary metrology instrumentation for the defense and aerospace sectors. Over a decade ago, a survey found that over one half of all American households owned a product that Optikos had helped design and over 500 million optical components of their design had been manufactured.
Optikos Corporation was started in Dr. Fantone’s home while he was employed by Polaroid Corporation. He left his employment at Polaroid in 1984 and continued to consult for Polaroid for nearly 20 years. From the mid-1980s until moving to Wakefield, MA in 2007, Optikos was located in Cambridge, MA close to MIT.
Over the last 30 years Optikos has developed several lines of metrology equipment for measuring the image quality of optical and electro optical systems, and for assessing the surface topography of molds used in the ophthalmic industry. Since its beginning the company has provided optical design and engineering services to a broad range of companies around the world including consumer product manufacturers, defense contractors, and medical device manufacturers. Their client list is a virtual Who’s Who of the optical industry and corporations utilizing optical technology.
During this time the company has been awarded over 70 patents and numerous product recognitions and awards. When asked about the future of Optikos, Fantone commented, “I see us continuing to grow as an enabler of optical technology for our clients. Our instruments provide essential tools to manufacturers of optics and optical systems. We shall continue ‘Bringing Innovative Solutions Into Focus’ for our customers.”
