Jenoptik supplies metrology for truck crank and gear shafts worth several millions

Date Announced: 11 Sep 2012

Optical, pneumatic and tactile metrology technologies included in series of orders.

Within just a few weeks Jenoptik has secured several multi-million orders in the commercial vehicle industry for the measurement of truck crank and gear shafts. In this context Jenoptik’s Industrial Metrology division is benefiting from its flexible solutions of tactile, optical and pneumatic measurement technologies. Leading truck manufacturers worldwide put their faith in the division’s expertise and experience gained over many years in this field.

With the award of several large orders, Jenoptik’s Industrial Metrology division has further expanded its strong market position as a supplier of metrology for the global commercial vehicle industry in just a few weeks.

In the months of July and August leading truck manufacturers submitted orders for metrology valued at several million euros and are putting their faith in Jenoptik’s longstanding experience and metrology solutions in the high precision measurement of truck crank and gear shafts. Jenoptik benefited in particular from its optical metrology in winning these orders. In this area the Jenoptik Group is the global market leader.

The special challenge posed by truck crank shafts is the length and weight of the workpiece which has to be measured. In addition to the corresponding flexibility and speed of the measurement technology, customers are demanding increasingly faster cycle times, fully automatic measurement systems and extremely tight tolerances for the complex workpiece to be produced.

The experience accumulated over many years by Jenoptik’s Industrial Metrology division in the measurement of truck crank shafts over 1.50 meters in length, together with the continuous further development of tactile, optical and pneumatic measurement solutions, enables the division to meet these requirements and has now led to new orders being awarded by leading international customers. The measurement technology is to produce more energy efficient engines also for commercial vehicles.

In the field of optical shaft metrology customers worldwide are particularly impressed with the HOMMEL-ETAMIC opticline measurement systems. The key outstanding features of the non-contact optical measurement systems are their flexible application, speed and high precision. The order for the commercial vehicle industry includes a number of fully automatic measurement systems for various operational levels and a robot loaded 100% final inspection measuring machine for a number of plants worldwide.

In the tactile metrology area the division also sold a number of fully automated and robot loaded shape measurement systems and combined roughness and contour measurement stations which are used specially for measuring very long and heavy crank shafts. This is an area in which Jenoptik has continued to develop the measurement methods, significantly improving the measurement speed at maximum precision.
