Maker of laser and optical components and modules selected to highlight best of UK manufacturing.
SAN JOSE, Calif., May 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Oclaro, Inc. (NASDAQ: OCLR), a tier-one provider and innovator of optical communications and laser solutions, today announced that it has been selected to take part in an exhibition demonstrating the very best of British manufacturing this summer. Beating competition from hundreds of UK companies, Oclaro will be featured in the Government's "Make it in Great Britain" exhibition at the Science Museum during the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
During the exhibition, Oclaro will showcase its manufacturing strength and latest telecommunications and laser solutions. The exhibition is the culmination of the Make it in Great Britain campaign - an initiative launched last year by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills which aims to challenge outdated opinions and transform the image of modern manufacturing.
Oclaro is a tier-one provider and innovator of optical communications and laser solutions. The company delivers the optical solutions that are helping to deliver the bandwidth and low-latency that consumers require for bandwidth intensive applications such as video services, cloud computing, and voice over IP.
In addition, Oclaro also provides discrete laser and optical components that are revolutionizing the lives of people and businesses and transforming our interaction with electronics. For example, lasers are being used for heating and illumination, optical mice in computers, high speed video download using optical cables, user-friendly interfaces based on finger navigation, home and professional hair removal, cosmetic surgery, industrial applications, and for advanced data storage.
"We are delighted to be a part of the Make it in Great Britain exhibition, and feel very proud to be representing the manufacturing industry," said Adam Price, Senior Vice President Product Development, Photonic Components Business Unit at Oclaro, Inc. "As a global innovator with manufacturing facilities located in the UK, we look forward to demonstrating our manufacturing strength and highlighting some of the laser and communications innovations we are bringing to customers around the world."
The opportunity to showcase in the exhibition was open to manufacturing companies nationwide, with organizers keen to raise awareness about the dynamic, advanced and innovative industry that exists in the UK today.
Business Minister Mark Prisk said, "Manufacturing accounts for 8 per cent of total UK employment and well over half of export goods, yet current perceptions of the industry are out of date and do not reflect that reality. We have selected a really exciting mix of exhibits, and I hope that as many people as possible visit the exhibition and see all of the great examples of British design and manufacturing – it will be spectacular."
Ian Blatchford, Director of the Science Museum commented, "We're incredibly excited to be hosting the Make it in Great Britain exhibition this summer. The Science Museum and its world leading collections demonstrate some of the greatest engineering achievements of the last 200 years. We hope that as many people as possible visit the exhibition, and see at first-hand how innovation in British manufacturing is still thriving today."
The exhibition will be open from July 24th to September 9th, and is free to visit. For more information please visit http://makeitingreatbritain.bis.gov.uk/.
