Oxxius, the Lannion, France, maker of compact visible-range laser sources and photonic systems, will look to expand its international activities after raising €5 million from venture backers.

The firm, which announced its acquisition of US-based laser illumination and imaging specialist 89 North during the SPIE Photonics West event earlier this year, has now attracted support from domestic venture outfits Go Capital and Xplore by Épopée Gestion.

The proceeds are set to fund the group company’s further commercial expansion internationally over the next three years.

Company CTO and founder Thierry Georges said: “This capital raise marks a new milestone in Oxxius's growth trajectory. It will allow us to convert the momentum built in 2026 into a lasting, structured commercial presence in our strategic markets - and to approach the next three years of development with confidence.”

Life sciences

Founded in 2002 to exploit Georges’ research into novel visible-range lasers, Oxxius designs and manufactures proprietary high-performance sources, primarily designed for applications in life sciences including imaging, flow cytometry, sequencing, and optical metrology.

The firm now employs 70 people in France alongside its US team in Williston, Vermont, and describes itself as having a highly differentiated approach positioning it as a full-service supplier and leading player in a global market estimated at over $20 billion.

Its sales are primarily export-driven, with Oxxius claiming unique capability in France when it comes to manufacturing compact and powerful but low-energy consumption lasers at an industrial scale.

“This distinctive technology positions Oxxius to compete directly with the world's leading players,” stated the firm. “This equity raise is designed to fund Oxxius's international commercial development strategy for the 2026-2029 period.

“The goal is to deepen Oxxius's proximity to customers in its key international markets, providing stronger technical and commercial support through expanded local teams on the ground.”

Quantum target

The push is expected to allow the company to consolidate its position in the visible laser market while maximizing synergies across its core markets of life sciences, metrology, and OEM customers.

It is also expected to aid targeting of new markets including quantum technologies, where Oxxius says that it offers some of the most efficient and quantum-system-ready lasers available.

Camille Le Roux Larsabal from investor Xplore by Épopée Gestion commented: “With Oxxius, Xplore is backing a rare photonic expertise capable of competing with the best players in the world.

“The acquisition of 89 North has already laid the groundwork for a strong US presence; this raise gives Oxxius the means to turn it into a genuine engine of growth. This is exactly the kind of industrial trajectory we want to support at the regional level.”

Bertrand Distinguin, managing partner at Go Capital, added: “In a context of rapidly expanding global markets, we are convinced that Oxxius has all the assets needed to become a reference player in photonic technologies. We are proud to contribute to this ambition alongside the Breton leadership team.”
