Key design elements of the new infrared-supercontinuum detector.
The holmium laser output passes through an isolator (>40  dB suppression) and is focused into the core of the tapered fiber device using an 𝑓=5  mm ZnSe objective lens. The output is collected using an identical lens and focused into a Miriad S3 spectrometer (from Miriad Technologies). The inset shows the dispersion of both the untapered step-index fiber and the microwire section, which was calculated by solving the characteristic equation of an infinite cladding cylindrical waveguide to obtain the propagation constant 𝛽.
