Norwegian oil conmpany Statoil's "Troll A" platform, in the North Sea off the west coast of Norway. Said to be among the largest and most complex engineering projects ever undertaken, the platform was towed into the North Sea in 1996. However, other platforms in the region have exceeded their initial design lifetimes, and new technologies including photonics are needed to maximize useful production. Credit: Statoil. |
