Record year for Jenoptik but orders dip amid market uncertainty

12 Feb 2025

Full-year sales for 2024 rise to €1.12 billion after another strong year for the German firm's advanced photonics division.

Jenoptik has confirmed that its 2024 sales rose 5 per cent from the 2023 figure, reaching €1.12 billion despite what it has described as an increasingly challenging market.

With earnings rising by a similar degree (EBITDA of €222 million) and the Germany-headquartered photonics company maintaining a solid balance sheet, CEO Stefan Traeger says that although market conditions have taken a turn for the worse, he was confident of continued growth in the medium term.

However the immediate future looks more difficult, with Jenoptik’s annual order intake dropping 6 per cent to €1.03 billion, and its backlog of €670 million down nearly 10 per cent on the figure posted this time last year.

2026 target maintained
Back in November Traeger had warned that Jenoptik would not achieve its long-standing target of €1.2 billion revenues this year despite the continued strong performance of the firm’s advanced photonics division, which includes the vast majority of its laser and optical technology output.

“2024 was a successful year for Jenoptik with record revenue and earnings,” observed the CEO. “Despite an increasingly difficult economic environment over the course of the year we achieved our revenue and earnings targets set at the beginning of the year, executed on the expansion of our production capacities as planned, and further reduced our net debt.

“Although the environment in our key markets is currently very challenging, [Jenoptik Group] is well positioned. Jenoptik has established strong growth platforms in its core markets of semiconductor and electronics, life science and medical technology, metrology, and smart mobility, and thus very good medium-term growth prospects.”

The current environment - expected to last until at least the middle of the year - means that the company’s executive board is yet to formulate a firm forecast for its 2025 sales, although the total is still expected to hit €1.2 billion next year.

“With regard to the semiconductor equipment industry, being of special importance to Jenoptik, the company continues to expect an upturn in demand in the second half of 2025,” stated the company, which will provide a 2025 forecast when it presents the 2024 annual report and more detail on the performance of each company division on March 25.
