Jenoptik installs first distracted driver program in Australia

03 May 2023

Provides State of Victoria with mobile camera systems to spot illegal mobile phone use and seatbelt violations.

Jenoptik, a manufacturer of smart mobility solutions, as well as diverse photonics systems and lasers, says it is delivering “one of the world’s first distracted driver programs” to an Australian customer. The company has a three-year contract with a volume in “the low double-digit million euro range” and with an optional two-year extension.

The contract, with the state of Victoria’s Department of Justice and Community Safety, is to deliver a full-service, mobile road safety camera solution that can detect illegal mobile phone use, the absence of seatbelts by drivers and passengers, and the provision of an offences verification system.

Sam Iglewski, Managing Director of Jenoptik Australia, commented, “Using a mobile phone or other devices while driving is distracting and greatly increases the chance of being involved in an accident. This particularly dangerous driver behavior has been an ever-increasing issue during recent years. We are especially delighted to be able to now deliver such a solution that will help road authorities to tackle this challenge.”

Jenoptik will provide the State of Victoria with a number of efficient, 24/7 self-operating, mobile trailers with all necessary enforcement camera equipment to detect in-car mobile phone use as well as seat belt violations with strong image quality and accuracy. The mobile trailers will be deployed in various locations over time, thus being able to cover an extensive network of Victorian roads.

Safety ambition

Kevin Chevis, head of Jenoptik’s Smart Mobility Solutions division, said, “Making roads and communities safer is our ambition around the globe. Therefore, we are excited to further contribute to road safety by delivering this innovative project, which is in line with our strategy to grow the share of recurring revenues in our business.”

Jenoptik’s Smart Mobility Solutions division provides photonics-based, innovative and sustainable solutions, including technology and services for Road Safety, Public Security and Road User Charging. Customers include local and governmental authorities, police and enforcement agencies, as well as public and private organizations.

Traffic Law Enforcement and ANPR technology is at the core of the product portfolio. Solutions cover a wide range of stationary and mobile applications such as vehicle monitoring and classification, average and spot speed, red-light enforcement including additional features, civil security, as well as road user charging and emission control, using video analytics and artificial intelligence.
