Viavi acquires Jackson Labs for position, navigation and timing solutions…

13 Oct 2022

…and Lumentum expands its manufacturing operations and R&D in Slovenia.

Viavi Solutions has completed the acquisition of Jackson Labs Technologies, which is based in Las Vegas, NV, a developer of position, navigation and timing (PNT) solutions for military and civilian applications. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Jackson Labs develops and supplies modules, subsystems and box-level solutions that include front-end receivers, transcoders, rack-mounted equipment, and patented retrofit technology.

Its customer base includes armed forces, defense contractors, energy distribution infrastructure, Low Earth Orbit operators, and 5G service providers.

Jackson Labs’ M-Code solutions complement and advance Viavi’s timing and synchronization portfolio at a time when PNT requirements for defense, space, commercial aviation, transportation and telecommunication networks are expanding and becoming increasingly critical.

Oleg Khaykin, President and CEO of Viavi, commented, “As telecommunications, avionics and mission-critical infrastructure adopt next-generation technology, legacy timing and synchronization protocols are no longer sufficient. Jackson Labs is a trusted provider of PNT solutions in these markets, and we look forward to addressing these opportunities together.”

Said Jackson, CEO of Jackson Labs, said, “Being a part of Viavi will expand our market reach worldwide, and allow us to further deliver solutions for the rapidly developing PNT landscape as it enters a new era.”

Lumentum expands manufacturing operations and R&D in Slovenia

Lumentum, a developer of innovative optical and photonic products, has expanded its manufacturing operations and advanced R&D in Škoflijica, Slovenia, for specialty optical fibers that are essential components of many Lumentum products. This expansion more than doubles Lumentum’s manufacturing and R&D footprint in Slovenia.

Alex Schoenfelder, senior VP and general manager of commercial lasers, commented, “Specialty optical fibers are a key enabling component for industrial fiber lasers and increasingly for other new applications in the industrial, life sciences, and communications markets. Our team in Slovenia has given us unique fibers that enable differentiated performance and cost.”

The state-of-the-art facility includes a Center of Excellence for advanced R&D to develop fundamental laser component technology in addition to products. The site includes a 137,000 square foot plot with plans for further future expansion to align capacity with the growing demand for specialty fibers in industrial, communications, and other growing new applications.

“The Lumentum Slovenia site is a shining example of successful deployment of Lumentum's Production System in a greenfield operation, and a resounding affirmation of our zero-defect quality and continuous improvement journey,” said Misha Rozenberg, senior VP, global operations, and chief quality officer.
