Non-invasive screening for skin cancer
The Spectra-Scope, devised by Korean firm Speclipse, is a lightweight, portable device that detects the biochemical signature of skin tissue using laser-induced plasma spectroscopy (LIPS). Also known as laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), the rapid, non-invasive technique uses a nanosecond-pulsed laser source to create a plasma from the tissue under investigation. The plasma emits light that can be used to "train" a neural network to spot likely cancerous lesions. Image: Speclipse.
