An ultra-broadband laser frequency comb from the spectrograph of the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), located in South Africa. SALT is the largest optical telescope in the southern hemisphere. The image shows the lines acting as a ‘ruler’ providing a calibration scale. These ‘rulers’ in optical frequency are used in high-resolution astronomical spectrographs for applications including exoplanet hunting. Credit: Derryck Reid, Heriot-Watt University. |
