SPECIAL OPTICS
Special Optics designs, develops and manufactures precision optical components from one facility located in Wharton, New Jersey. Since our beginning in 1965 we have developed and refined a wide range of standard and custom optical capabilities. As...
... a result we have evolved into a unique company, offering standard catalog optics along with custom designs, while continuing to focus on responding to customer needs quickly. In this light, our policy is to provide 24-hour turnaround on all quotations.
We offer the following new products:
1) In-Line Beam Steerer These are convenient devices that precisely change the angle of a transmitted optical beam.
(2) Motorized Zoom Beam Expander Faster Controller and PDA user interface.
(3) Polymer Apochromatic Waveplates

Novermber 2003 Special Optics has won a Phase II SBIR contract from the U. S. Army White Sands Missile Range. The award of $730,000 is two-year contract to design and manufacture a motorized zoom lens system to image missiles during flight testing.
The input aperture of the system is 300 mm, and the f-number ranges from f/4 to f/32. The lens system will provide high-resolution imaging over the visible spectrum in a desert environment.
Dr. J. Michael Finlan is the Program Manager. Since 1965, Special Optics has manufactured optical components and complex multi-element optical systems for medical, military, industrial and semiconductor applications.
August 2003 Two New Products Introduced:
(1) In-Line Beam Steerers These are convenient devices that precisely change the angle of a transmitted optical beam.
(2) Apochromatic Waveplates These extend the wavelength range of 1/4 and 1/2 waveplates through the use of multilayer polymer stacks laminated between optically flat glass windows. They offer wider acceptance angles and bandwidths than conventional crystal achromatic waveplates.
July 2003 SBIR Phase I Awarded from the US Air Force Research Laboratory to design and build key components of a 'Non-Mechanical Wide-Angle Image-Pointing System'. It operates in the mid-infrared and zooms to specified sub-regions of the wide field with high resolution. March 2003 SBIR Phase I Awarded from the Army to design and build a Motorized Zoom Lens for long-range Missile Imaging. We have supplied a ¼ scale version.
