European project will advance standards for the remote optical sensing of airborne pollution.
Exclusive from Opto & Laser Europe (OLE) magazine
Organizations based in the UK, Greece, Germany, Israel, Norway and Romania will make up the Remote Optical Sensing Evaluation (ROSE) programme, which will run for the next three years at a cost of Euro 1.2 million.
The project will design and validate calibration tools and testing methodologies using a variety of commercial remote optical sensing instruments.
Project manager Lesley Hanna told OLE: "Instruments employing optical sensing techniques can be used to monitor air quality in accordance with European directives, but they are hampered by a lack of performance certification standards. ROSE will define quality-control parameters and draw up an evaluation methodology that could eventually form the basis of a European standard."
The ROSE consortium includes experts on emissions and air quality measurements, instrument manufacturers, end users and organizations experienced in standardization and certification.
